July 10th was the day that the south cove loon pair hatched their young. I arrived on the pond at 0530 and in the dim morning light could see something very tiny flopping around the nest site.....and occasionally slipping back beneath the wing of the adult. It was the adorably sweet and remarkably mobile new hatchling. At one point the chick actually fell off the nesting site and into the water. I was incredibly alarmed, as it was a very windy day. If the chick moved beyond the edge of this tiny island, he would be swept into the back bay of the pond. Luckily he was able to climb back up the edge of the island back to mom ( or was it dad?).
