2009 was a fascinating summer on the pond with the loons.  It was full of surpises and new photo opportunities for me.  The North Cove loon pair included a new male, and the behavior of the mated pair was somewhat unique compared to years past.  I have watched and photographed loons on this pond for 6 years and I have never seen such attentive parents once the chicks arrived.  The chicks themselves were different  in a way that I can only describe as "precocious".  They seemed feisty and extremely active from day one.  It was such fun to spend time with them on the pond.  The fact that the chicks hatched SO much later in the summer than "normal" meant many, many ,many more pre-dawn trips to the pond anticipating their arrival.  The North Cove pair hatched their yound on July 12 and 13.
